With 62 miles of shoreline, Lake Burton is the largest in the chain of six lakes managed by Georgia Power. Located in Rabun and Habersham Counties of Northeast Georgia. This system of lakes was established in the early 1900s to generate hydro-electricity to service the growing populations and demand in cities like Atlanta. The name Lake Burton was derived from the town of Burton which was one of the largest towns in Rabun County until it was submerged to create the lake.
Lake Burton is home to the fish hatchery where fish are raised and then transported to area streams to be released. Moccasin Creek State Park, which boasts a public campground with lake access and hiking trails including Hemlock Falls is located on the west side of the lake.
